-----------------------------------
I'm happy to present another large caliber shell casing chess set. Many of these casings are expensive and hard to locate. I only have a limited supply , so I only make these once in a while.
THE CHESS PIECES:
Cuts, bends and slashes are used to create unique characteristics in each piece. The light side pieces have been brushed down to their natural colors, while the dark side has been painted black and has some brushed tips and bottom edges.
The shell calibers are as follows:
-brass Pawns are .50 cal BMG shell tops,
-the entire rear rank are made from 20MM Dummy round casings.
The steel 20MM dummy rounds are used to test feed U.S. fighter jet aircraft machine gun mechanisms. Inside all but the Bishops, you can see some of the original polymer filler used to add weight to the casing to simulate live round weight.
THE BOARD:
The big 17 inch board was made from a 1970's era dining room table top. The core of the board is pressed particle with an Oak hardwood veneer on the top and bottom. The pressed wood inner core is a great feature, as it will make it harder for humidity to warp this larger size board. Its trimmed with a solid copper strip, and even the nails are vintage iron cobblers tacks. The black squares are painted on and the entire board is dry brushed weathered to give a rustic effect. Felt feet were applied to the bottom and a quarter was placed in the first picture to show a size reference. The board is signed, dated and serial numbered, and the light king is also signed and dated. The entire set is clear coated.
MEASUREMENTS:
Board measurements: 17 x 17 x 7/8 inches
Pieces height: from 1 1/2 to 6 1/2 inches
Pieces width: from 3/4 inch to 1 1/8 inch
Total weight: 13 lbs
